The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) president, Hon. Eng. Moses Magogo has expressed confidence in Uganda’s readiness to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Kenya and Tanzania from February 1 to 28, 2025.
Speaking on NBS Sport’s Inside Sport show on Monday evening, Magogo emphasized that Uganda requires just one stadium for CHAN and Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, has been fully upgraded to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
“For CHAN, CAF confirmed that we need just one stadium and for that, Namboole is ready,” he stated, highlighting the installation of new, higher-quality floodlights and other improvements at the stadium.
Magogo also detailed preparations for four training grounds—Namboole’s outside pitch, Kampala International School of Uganda (KISU) pitch, Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku and the FUFA Stadium in Kadiba which are being renovated to support the tournament.
“Besides the main stadium, we need four training grounds which are currently being prepared,” Magogo noted, adding that social infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, and hotels are in good condition to host the tournament.
CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe visited Uganda in December 2024 to assess preparations. Following an inspection of Namboole Stadium, he expressed satisfaction with the progress and commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his contributions to football development in the region.
Looking ahead to hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Magogo revealed that Uganda would require two main stadiums—Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and Hoima Stadium, which is under construction—with Akii Bua Stadium serving as a backup. “For AFCON, the plan is Namboole and Hoima.
Akii Bua Stadium is a backup plan, but the two stadiums are good enough,” he explained. He added that both stadiums would be supported by new training facilities, while Hoima’s infrastructure, including Hoima Hospital and Hoima Airport, will be operational by 2027.
Magogo assured that collaborations between the government and private sector are underway to boost accommodation options, including the construction of new hotels, to ensure a successful hosting of both CHAN and AFCON.
