Ugandan players abroad had a midweek to remember, with Rogers Mato and Ashraf Mandela finding the back of the net, while goalkeepers Denis Onyango and Ismael Watenga faced off in a dramatic league clash in South Africa.
South Africa: Ugandan goalkeepers Ismael Watenga and Denis Onyango were on opposite ends as Golden Arrows held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the Betway Premiership.
Watenga made crucial saves, including a last-minute stop to secure a valuable point for Arrows, while Onyango captained Sundowns to their first draw of the season after 18 wins in 21 matches. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jamal Salim featured in Richards Bay FC’s 2-1 win over Sekhukhune.
Macedonia: Rogers Mato continued his impressive form at Vardar FK, scoring in stoppage time to seal a 2-0 derby win over Rabotnicki. His fourth goal of the season helped Vardar climb out of the relegation zone, now sitting 8th with 20 points.
Mato was also named in the league’s team of the week.
Rwanda: Ashraf Mandela scored a rare goal as Police FC eliminated Emmanuel Okwi’s AS Kigali from the Rwanda Peace Cup quarterfinals with a 4-3 aggregate win.
The former Vipers defender dedicated his goal to his late ex-teammate, Nigerian striker Abubakar Lawal, unveiling an undershirt tribute after his 27th-minute equalizer in the second leg’s 2-2 draw.
From commanding performances in goal to clutch goals in crucial matches, Ugandan players continue to make headlines across different leagues. With club competitions heating up, more standout performances are expected this weekend.
