Kenya President William Ruto has applauded Harambee Starlets following their stunning 1-0 away win against Tunisia to qualify to the next round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament on Wednesday.

The slim victory at the Stade Olympique de Sousse in Tunis, came after a 0-0 first leg in Nairobi, which had put the national team and head coach Beldine Odemba under significant pressure.

In Tunis, Kenya benefited from an early goal from Terry Engesha, who found space outside Tunisia’s box to fire in a low ball past their custodian. However, Kenya goalkeeper Lilian Awuor produced a woman of the match performance, saving two penalties, one in the first half, and the other in the second period.

Awuor’s heroics saw her make a double save to deny Tunisia from the spot before the half-time break, and she once again saved another penalty in the 77th minute.

“Congratulations to Harambee Starlets on your hard-fought victory over Tunisia in Sousse, Tunisia, securing a place in the second and final round of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers,” Kenya’s Head of State wrote on his social media accounts.

“Against all odds, you stood tall, fought hard, and delivered a performance that has made our nation proud. Kenya stands firmly behind you. Your journey inspires millions, and your determination embodies the true spirit of our nation. Keep the fire burning and keep winning.”

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed said: “Congratulations Harambee Starlets on your exceptional performance and resilient fight to secure victory in your return leg fixture against Tunisia, your determination paid off, we are proud of you.”

Kenya will now face the Gambia in the next round with matches scheduled for October.
