Botswana’s senior women’s national football team coach Alex Malete has said the Mares lost 0-2 to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday due to poor finishing.
Malete said this in a post-match interview after his charges paid for missed scoring opportunities in the first leg of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) first round tie at Obed Itan Stadium in Francistown.
"We did everything right except two things: first we gave away two goals and the second thing, we could have scored maybe six or seven goals today. We created so many chances a lot of one-on-one with the keeper but couldn't put away the chances,” he told the media.
Ahead of the second-leg in Kinshasa, the Mares coach said he was optimistic of upsetting the hosts and advancing to the second round.
“We are positive. We believe we can overturn the result. We created enough and now we need to work on our finishing,” he added. The Mares’ squad comprises America-based stars Esalenna Galekhutle and Masego Nfandiso who play college soccer in the USA.
