Botswana’s senior women’s national football team coach Alex Malete has challenged the Mares to use home-ground advantage when welcoming the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Saturday.

He said this during a pre-match press conference, which Pan Africa Football, monitored ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) first-round, first-leg qualifying match at Obed Itan Stadium in Francistown.

"We need the home advantage. We need to show that we are home. We need to take advantage when we are here and take advantage when we go to the DRC,” Malete said.

The Mares coach said he was bracing for a tough away match in the DRC “but we have a group that is committed and experienced enough. It is difficult and we know what to expect.”

Earlier, Malete said his target was to ensure that they get past the Congolese and get into the final qualifying round. The Mares’ squad comprises America-based stars Esalenna Galekhutle and Masego Nfandiso who play college football.
