Ghana’s U-17 girls made a bold start to the WAFU Zone-B U-17 Women's Cup on Thursday.
The Black Maidens made light work of Bénin in the opening game of the maiden edition of the tournament hosted in Ghana. Four goals from a breathtaking display cushioned the Black Maidens in the first half at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence.
Priscilla Mensah shot Ghana ahead five minutes into the first half before Christiana Ashieku chalked a hat-trick with goals in the 17th, 44th and the 45th minutes to wrap up the first department of the encounter.
Back from recess, Bénin looked a bit more purposeful, capitalizing on Ghana’s defensive mistake in the 55th minute to pull a goal back.
It was however too late to save the situation for the fellow West Africans in what was the first of two clashes between the teams following Burkina Faso’s withdrawal from the competition.
Hat-trick hero, Christiana Ashieku earned the “Lady of the Match” as her three goals became the first for the tournament.
Per the current structure following Burkina Faso’s withdrawal, both Ghana and Benin have qualified for the semifinals of the competition awaiting the outcome of Group B.
