The Uganda Cranes will step onto the Cairo International Stadium turf on Wednesday, 20th March with one mission: Securing a vital win against Mozambique in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Ahead of this crucial encounter, head coach Paul Put and team captain Khalid Aucho have assured fans that the squad is prepared and motivated to battle for maximum points.

Coach Put acknowledged the challenges of assembling the squad but remained optimistic about the team's spirit and determination.
“When we make a call-up and start preparations, it’s always difficult to have all players at the same time. But that’s not unique to Uganda—it happens to other teams as well. However, we received the players gradually, and I’m pleased with the team’s spirit,” Put stated.
The Belgian tactician emphasized the importance of the match, particularly given the standings in the qualification race.
“What I saw in training made me very happy—the players’ mentality and performance were impressive. If you want to be dominant in your ranking, every game matters. Mozambique is three points ahead of us so this is a significant game for us,” he added.
As Uganda seeks to revive its World Cup qualification hopes, Put challenged his players to rise to the occasion:
“If you have ambition and want good results, you must prove it on the pitch. Away games are always tough but my players understand the importance of this match—not just for us but also for Mozambique.”

Team captain Khalid Aucho echoed his coach’s sentiments, reinforcing the squad’s readiness and hunger for victory.
“The boys are in good condition, motivated, and ready to fight for their nation. They are absorbing everything the coaches are telling them,” Aucho remarked. With the game being played in Egypt, the experienced midfielder called on Ugandan fans in the diaspora to turn up in numbers and cheer the team on.
“I know we have several fans here in Egypt. We urge you to come and support us against Mozambique. It would mean a lot to the team.” Aucho also emphasized the team’s shift in focus from the AFCON qualifiers to the World Cup campaign.
“AFCON qualifiers are behind us. Now, it’s about the World Cup. It’s a new challenge and we’re ready to embrace it. The boys understand the magnitude of this competition.”
Despite playing at a neutral venue, Aucho remains optimistic about Uganda’s chances.
“Football is unpredictable. You can play at home and not win, but you can also win away. Mozambique might be playing away, but they might feel at home here. For us, it’s about stepping up and delivering.”
