Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has come out to explain why head coach Nasreddine Nabi was red carded after their Betway Premiership fixture against Golden Arrows on Sunday.

Amakhosi’s poor run in the league continued after they went down 1-0 to Golden Arrows at a rainy Moses Mabhida Stadium. Arrows skipper Gladwin Shitolo scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute on a disappointing day for the thousands of Amakhosi fans, who had braved the inclement weather to come out in a show of support for the team.

At the final whistle, Nabi was sent off with a straight red card and as such the 59-year-old Tunisian coach will not be in the dugout when Chiefs play against Sekhukhune United in their next league assignment and in their Nedbank Cup round of 32 fixture.

“Normally in football, if you make a substitution, every substitution is 30 seconds [injury-time]. So I give you a questions, how many substitutions were there in the second half?” Youssef told media in KZN as quoted by idiskitimes.

“They make five substitutions and we make three substitutions. So if you count how many times makes that.

“The issue with the red card is, he [Nabi] went to the referee and said ‘how we make so many substitutions. That’s the strategy of Golden Arrows, they try to win time, every challenge they go down and you give only three minutes injury-time. You have to give five minutes’.”

He continued: “We’ve played now 12 games, always five minutes or more than five minutes for extra-time. If you give three minutes… and then you allowed them to take time, you don’t give them a yellow card [for time-wasting].

“We feel like, he tried to help the opposition team. I know it’s not a good situation for us, but I don’t want to talk [more] about the referee.”

The defeat saw Chiefs move down to sixth place in the Betway Premiership standings, remaining on 18 points after 13 rounds. They will next host to Sekhukhune United at the same venue next weekend, Sunday 19 January.
