East Bengal Women tightened their grip on the Indian Women’s Super League top spot with a commanding 4-2 win over Sethu Women FC in an electrifying clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Ghanaian forward Elshaddai Acheampong stole the show with a stunning brace, while Uganda’s Resty Nanziri and India’s Soumya Guguloth were also on target to ensure East Bengal walked away with maximum points.

The visitors wasted no time asserting their dominance, as Acheampong found the net just four minutes into the game before doubling her tally in the 15th minute. However, Sethu responded swiftly through Ugandan striker Amina Nababi, who halved the deficit in the 19th minute.

Just before halftime, Nanziri restored East Bengal’s two-goal cushion with a clinical finish, putting the table leaders firmly in control.

Sethu came out stronger in the second half, applying relentless pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 64th minute when another Ugandan, Hadijah Nandago, scored for the second consecutive match to reignite the contest.

As the hosts pushed for an equalizer, East Bengal delivered the final blow. With three minutes left on the clock, Guguloth capitalized on a defensive lapse to seal the victory and extend East Bengal’s lead at the top by four points.

Meanwhile, Sethu Women FC continue to struggle, sitting just one point above the relegation zone after failing to win in their last four matches.

Elsewhere in the league, Fazila Ikwaput’s Gokulam Kerala suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to bottom-placed Hops FC, while Joanita Ainembabazi’s Kickstart edged past Sreebhumi 3-2 to move closer to safety.

On the individual front, Ikwaput remains the league’s top scorer with 16 goals, while fellow Ugandans Nanziri, Nababi and Nandago have registered 5, 4 and 2 goals respectively.
