Malawi senior women’s football team came from behind to beat Zambia 3-2 in a friendly at Reiz Stadium in Lusaka on Tuesday afternoon.

It was perfect revenge for the Scorchers who lost to the Copper Queens 2-0 in an initial strength building match on Sunday. The Scorchers’ win ended a run of two consecutive losses to Zambia in all competitions, thanks to the late fightback.

The hosts had a positive start to the game on Tuesday after Rachel Kundananji slammed the ball into the net from a rebound. An initial attempt had bounced off the upright to create the opener for the American-based forward.

Zambia led 1-0 at break. In the second half, the visitors replied with France-based striker Rose Kadzere leveling matters, making the most of a defensive mistake six minutes into the second-half.

A few minutes later, Faith Chimzimu extended Malawi’s lead before Sabitha Thom made it 3-1 in the 56th minute after firing the ball into the net when she connected skipper Tabitha Chawinga’s ball across the goal mouth from the left in a blistering counterattack.

Zambia fought back with Rachel Nachula scoring late but time was not enough for the hosts to get another goal.

The neighbours are preparing for the final qualifying round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Malawi will face the winner between Zimbabwe and Angola.
