South Africa is racing against time to put the pitch at the Peter Mokaba Stadium into a perfect shape for hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month. The venue in Polokwane has been earmarked to host Bafana Bafana against Lesotho in the next World Cup qualifiers but the pitch suffered damage during a music concert by Limpopo Province star Makhadzi in December.
That notwithstanding, Polokwane Executive Mayor Mosema Mpe made assurances that the pitch at the stadium will be ready for the qualifier against Lesotho on March 21.
"We'll be communicating with the PSL so that the first game, the stadium will be ready from 1 March, so the team has been working around the clock," Mpe told SABC. "You can even take photos or whatever, you can see the pitch is way different from what it was after that day the Premier and I were dancing here with Makhadzi."
"What we can also say is that Seshego [Stadium] is ready, the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is ready, and what we're going to do is have matches in all three stadiums," he added.
"That means we will not overload – for example, the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is highly overloaded, that's why now Seshego brings some relief but our intention is that we will have games being played there."
Football matches have not been played at the venue so far, but Mpe remains confident that everything will be in order in time for the game.
