Amid pressure after a three-game winless run, Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has hit back at his critics over his team’s 2-2 draw against FUS Rabat in Morocco’s Botola Pro match on Sunday.
Speaking to the press, Mokwena said his team cannot win every game and he does not need to explain the reason for every failure to win.
“You can’t win every game so I can’t sit here every time we don’t win and I have to explain this and that. Football is win, draw, or lose. Wydad can’t win every game. We are a new team; everyone doesn’t want me to say this but we are literally a new team. It’s 26 new players,” he said.
“I had the option to join clubs that were playing in the Champions League but when [Mamelodi] Sundowns played Wydad, I saw the passion of their fans and the love they had for me. This is why I chose Wydad because I could have gone to AS FAR or Raja Club Athletic.”
The former Sundowns handler then vented his frustrations over a lack of patience even when his team has more new players who are still adapting.
“What I see now, the lack of support and patience, it’s not easy, guys. What I see every week, throwing bottles and stuff, I don’t like it. Maybe some people don’t want to be here for long but that’s ok. My grandmother got sick the day pictures and videos went viral when some fans were throwing bottles at me. She was 86,” he added.
The South African will be chasing a first win in four league attempts away to 11th placed IR Tanger on March 16, 2025. The 38-year-old joined the Moroccan giants last year after parting ways with Sundowns.
Wydad are in third place on 42 points from 28 games, level with second ranked AS FAR Rabat. The two teams are seventeen points behind RS Berkane, competing for second place and a spot in the CAF Champions League next season.
