
Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has offered moral support to the South Africa under-17 national team ahead of their first group stage match against Egypt on Monday at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Mokwena visited Amajimbos’ camp in Morocco where the U-17 AFCON is taking place.
Addressing the up-and-coming players, the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor shared tips on how the youngsters can overcome adversity at the tournament.
“When you go for your first game against Egypt, in difficult moments, stick together and suffer together and that is what true sports is all about. I wish you all the best. If you need anything from us, we are all here to support you. We will be there from the first game on Monday,” Mokwena told SABC TV.
The tournament will kick off on Sunday, 30 March as Morocco host Uganda at 22h00 (local time / GMT), the start of a journey that will culminate with the final on 19 April.
The 16 teams will also be vying for a record 10 places for Africa at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Matches will be broadcast live on Morocco’s SNRT (Arryadia TV), CANAL+, beIN Sports and globally via IMG.
U-17 AFCON Groups:
GROUP A: Morocco (Hosts), Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia
GROUP B: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, South Africa, Egypt
GROUP C: Senegal, Gambia, Somalia, Tunisia
GROUP D: Mali, Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, Central African Republic
