Former Ghana winger, Yaw Preko has opened up on why foreign-born players often struggle to settle in the senior national team.

Ghanaian players born outside have displayed great skill with their various clubs abroad but have struggled to repeat the dose with the Black Stars.

In an interview with Accra based 3Sports, Preko revealed the factors that are hampering the smooth sailing of these players when they switch allegiance to play for Ghana.

“There are several factors behind their struggles. They need to understand our culture, and our passion for the game is different from what they are used to in Europe.

“Antoine Semenyo is one of the best, and if we use him well, he can be very effective. But you can’t compare how he plays in Europe to Africa. “Even a top player like Salah struggles with Egypt because the African terrain is different,” Preko said.

Ghanaians have occasionally shown their displeasure about the qualities of strikers Inaki Williams and Antoine Semenyo when they wear the national team jersey. Since switching allegiance to Ghana in 2022, Williams has scored just once in 17 appearances.

Antoine Semenyo has earned 25 caps and scored two goals for the national Black Stars. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup resuming in March, Ghanaians will be expecting more from the two forwards.
