Zamalek head coach Christian Gross described today’s match against Abu Qir Fertilizers in Egypt Cup as a difficult encounter, adding that he had anticipated challenges from the second division side.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Gross stated:
"It was good that Zamalek managed to score an early goal. Unfortunately, we missed the penalty taken by Zizo. Defensively, the team performed well but we needed to be more aggressive. Nonetheless, the team achieved the desired goal ahead of Sunday’s Confederation Cup clash against Black Bulls of Mozambique."
He continued:
"We must now close the chapter on the cup match to focus on the upcoming game against Black Bulls. I haven’t been here for long and need more time to get to know the players. I’m doing this my own way and I understand we have an important match in two days."
Gross added:
"Abdallah El Said will be ready for the Black Bulls match after playing 90 minutes today. There could be more player rotation in the coming period as it’s important to have multiple options for each position."
Regarding the performances of goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi, defender Hamza Mathlouthi and Ahmed Mahmoud he said:
"The trio played well and the opponent did not pose any real threat to Zamalek’s goal."
Commenting on the match timing, Gross remarked:
"Yes, there was an impact, and I don’t know why the game was scheduled at this time—perhaps for marketing reasons."
The coach concluded by addressing the substitution of Ahmed Fatouh, saying:
"Ahmed Fattouh suffered a muscle strain, which is why he was replaced to preserve him."
Zamalek secured a 2-0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers in their Round of 32 Egypt Cup clash at Cairo International Stadium. The win sets up a Round of 16 encounter against Modern Sport.
