Nkana FC are the new leaders of Zambia’s MTN Super League after upsetting Mutondo Stars 2-0 on Saturday, upstaging previous pacesetters Zesco United and holders Red Lions.
Nkana lead the standings for the first time this season with 33 points, at par on points with second, third and fourth-placed Kabwe Warriors, Zesco United, and Red Warriors who are all separated by goal-aggregate.
Congolese striker Idris Mbombo struck twice in the last two minutes of the match to hand Kalampa, as Nkana are also called, the home victory at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe and end a two-game winless run.
Nkana leapfrogged Zesco who wasted a chance to remain top when they came from behind to force a draw two-all away to Nkhwazi FC on Sunday at Imboela Stadium in Lusaka.
The hosts had snatched an early lead through Innocent Kashita just before the quarter-hour mark before Lasanga Kenneth cushioned the lead with another goal five minutes to the break.
Whatever, the coach said during pep-talk paid instant dividends as Peter Mukusuma reduced the arrears six minutes after resumption before Fredy Michael leveled matters four minutes later.
Holders Arrows too did their title defence a favour after beating fancied Power Dynamos 3-2 on Saturday whereas Forest Rangers pushed Zanaco FC under new coach Numba Mumamba deeper into the relegation zone after beating the bankers 2-0.
Elsewhere, Charles Lubasi’s 51st minute strike was enough for Lumwana Radiants to hand Green Eagles a first league loss of the season at Independence Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday.
Down the table, Zanaco still remain second from bottom, 10 points ahead of Indeni FC who could only muster a point after a barren draw with Green Buffaloes.
