Zambia have been granted a safe passage to the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) finals following Mozambique’s withdrawal from the qualifiers.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the withdrawal of the Mambas for the qualifiers that were scheduled for earlier this month.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Reuben Kamanga confirmed that CAF had written to them over Mozambique’s withdrawal. The reasons for the Mambas chickening out are unclear.

“Following the withdrawal of Mozambique from the CHAN 2024 qualifiers, please be informed that Zambia has qualified directly for the final tournament of CHAN 2024,” Kamanga said, while quoting CAF’s correspondence.

Kamanga said the Copper Bullets will now play friendlies to prepare for the CHAN finals scheduled for next February. “For now, we will encourage the technical bench to work on a programme for preparations so that we can be ready by the time we head to East Africa. Inevitably, the team will play a few friendly matches as part of preparations for the CHAN,” he said.

Chipolopolo coach Wedson Nyirenda had named a provisional 33-member squad ahead of the qualifiers against Mozambique on December 21 in Maputo and then Lusaka seven days later with the overall winner proceeding to the finals.

Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya will host the CHAN finals from 1 to 28 February 2025.
