Zambia won the COSAFA Under-20 Women’s Championship with a perfect record on second attempt after defeating Mozambique 1-0 in South Africa on Saturday.
The Young Copper Queens, probably drawing inspiration from their impressive seniors, had lost to guests Tanzania in the final five years ago in South Africa. This time around Charles Haalubono's girls, needing just a point, made amends with a dominant and controlled performance that subdued the Mozambicans at University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus Ground.
Zangobese Zulu's strike on the half-hour mark was all the Young Copper Queens needed to win the championship.
Zambia finished the tournament without conceding while collecting12 points after winning all four games, including against Lesotho 9-0, South Africa 3-0 and Botswana 6-0, en route to the winners’ podium of the five-team event played on round robin basis with team with the most points getting gold.
There still remain several matches to play to sort out where all the teams will finish but no other team can catch Zambia at this point.
