The draw for the first edition of the African Football League was completed over the weekend by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) with eight teams being drawn into four home-and-away duels. The quarterfinal round will take place beginning on October 20 when Al Ahly travel to face Simba SC for the first leg in Dar es Salaam. DR Congo’s TP Mazembe host Tunisia’s Espérance ST on October 21 while Angolan champions Petro de Luanda host Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on the same day. Enyimba of Nigeria host their first leg with Morocco’s Wydad AC on October 22 to finish up the quarterfinal first legs.
This year’s tournament is set to serve as a precursor for larger editions in the future as CAF looks to create a competition for Africa’s top clubs that improves on quality and prize money for the teams involved. The semifinals will begin four days after the quarterfinal round ends and the final is set to begin on November 5 with the first leg. All rounds will feature two home-and-away legs.
