Penalty kick shootouts were the theme on Tuesday in two Round of 16 matchups in Uganda’s domestic cup competition, the Stanbic Cup. Traditional powers and rivals met with Villa SC and Express FC playing out a scoreless draw, but the Jogoos of Villa emerged victorious after Express star Erick Kambale had his weak spot kick saved by substitute goalkeeper Joseph Yiga. Villa will take on Onduparaka FC in the quarterfinals as they attempt to redeem their underachieving season in the Uganda Premier League by winning the cup.
In the other matchup on Tuesday, Jinja based club BUL FC held on to win in penalties after drawing Bright Stars 2-2 in regulation. BUL, currently sitting in fourth place on the Uganda Premier League table, conceded two disappointing goals from set pieces to allow relegation candidates Bright Stars into the match but did enough to secure passage through penalties.
A report on Tuesday’s action is below from the Daily Monitor and highlights from both games are further down.
Express 0-0 SC Villa (Villa advance 4-3 on penalty kicks)
