After 70 minutes of scoreless football Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch produced a thrilling 2-2 DStv Premiership draw with four goals in the final portion of the game. Never short on drama in their league games, Chiefs will be disappointed with only one point as they remain in ninth place while Stellenbosch are right behind Amakhosi in tenth.
Neither team was threatening in the first half and it wasn’t until Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt introduced attacking substitutions Leonardo Castro and Khama Billiat that meaningful action began to occur. Unfortunately for the hosts, the first action was Stellenbosch taking the lead in the 72nd minute. Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi made poor judgment to come out for a corner-kick and longtime Zambia international midfielder Nathan Sinkala rose up to head into an empty net.
The madness was only beginning. Castro provided the equalizer only five minutes later by overpowering his defender to head in Reeve Frosler’s cross. Service from the flank was where Stellenbosch once again found success when Phathutshedzo Nange placed his header perfectly into the top corner to put the visitors up again.
It appeared that Stellenbosch may escape with the full three points but Kaizer Chiefs showed composure on each occasion they went down to respond quickly. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo scored the game’s final goal to equalize in the 85th minute, scuffing his first-time effort from a Happy Mashiane cutback but the shot was just enough to beat Sage Stephens in the Stellenbosch goal.
