It has been reported in many outlets as an inevitable decision for months, including here on multiple occasions, but it appears that Morocco national team manager Vahid Halilhodžić is finally set to be dismissed from the Atlas Lions. A meeting with Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) president Fouzi Lekjaa is on the cards for Thursday and reports indicate that the Bosnian coach will be told to make way for former Wydad AC manager Walid Regragui. EDIT: Halilhodžić has officially been dismissed from his post.
After winning the 2021-22 CAF Champions League and Botola Pro with Moroccan giants Wydad, Regragui bid farewell to the club following the team’s defeat in the 2020-21 Coupe du Trône final that took place at the end of July and has turned down multiple offers from other clubs. The finalist for Men’s Coach of the Year is considered the best candidate despite an impressive record for Halilhodžić as Morocco manager, who has not been able to repair his fractured relationship with Atlas Lions playmaker Hakim Ziyech as Lekjaa attempts to convince the Chelsea player to return to the fold.
