The fourth round of matches is complete in Tunisia’s Ligue 1 Professionnelle after one of the major derby matches in the country saw defending champions Étoile du Sahel host Club Africain on Thursday. A 1-1 tie between the two clubs deprived CA of a valuable victory away from home after Youssef Abdelli scored a late equalizer for Étoile to cancel out a second half opening goal from CA midfielder Ghaith Sghaier.
The featured derby match on Thursday featured plenty of controversy and the appropriate aggression from the players. CA supporters felt that a fierce challenge inside the opening fifteen minutes should have resulted in a red card for ESS and the defending champions also were fortunate to not have a penalty kick awarded against them towards the end of the first half.
Étoile remain at the top of Group A with seven points from four matches leaving them tied with Stade Tunisien. ST played to a thrilling 2-2 draw on Saturday with newly promoted EGS Gafsa in a match that saw an expulsion for each team soon after a late equalizer for Gafsa. ST and Étoile are two points clear of Club Africain and one point ahead of US Ben Guerdane who won away from home at ES Soliman.
In Group B, CS Sfaxien are the current leaders with a two-point lead on US Monastir and Espérance ST. CSS were defeated by ES Métlaoui which will likely see the club fall down the table considering Espérance and Monastir each have played one less match. Monastir allowed two goals in the second half to draw 2-2 at US Tataouine while EST were not in action due to their CAF Champions League obligations.
