Defending Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC were among the winners over the weekend as the 2023-24 season got underway over the weekend. The club’s new signing from Mauritanian champions FC Nouadhibou, Mohamed Salem, scored in the first half on his debut to double the lead for Vipers after captain Milton Karisa opened the scoring in a 2-1 victory at Gaddafi FC in Jinja. The Soldier Boyz of Gaddafi got one goal back early in the second half but could not pull level with the Venoms.
Also among the winners from the weekend are Jinja’s BUL FC who won 1-0 at Soltillo Bright Stars in the opening match of the new season. Debutant forward Lawrence Tezikya scored the only goal of the match with a swerving strike from distance.
Another club from the Eastern Region, Busoga United, also made plenty of noise on their season debut with a surprise 1-0 victory at Arua Hill. Isaac Mweru scored in the 15th minute to give Busoga the win in a place that is notoriously difficult for visiting clubs to earn points. Newly promoted Airtel Kitara also caused a surprise by upstaging last season’s runners-up SC Villa with a 2-1 victory away from home at Wankulukuku.
Maroons FC and another newly promoted side, NEC FC, were also among the winners from the opening weekend. See all the scores and highlights from four matches below.
