The Uganda Premier League made its return for the 2022-23 season over the weekend with the country’s top teams in action including Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA FC), URA SC, Express FC and reigning champions Vipers SC. The headline story from the weekend was an entertaining 3-2 victory for KCCA FC over Wakiso Giants, where playmaker Allan Okello made his return to Ugandan football. Ashraf Mugume scored twice for KCCA as they held off a late charge from the Purple Sharks for three points at home.
In the season’s curtain raiser, defending champions Vipers SC struggled to find their attacking stride following the departure of last season’s stars Bobosi Byaruhanga and Cesar Manzoki and could only muster a scoreless draw at home against Soltillo Bright Stars. 2020-21 season champions Express FC also failed to capture three points by failing to hold their lead in a 1-1 draw at the Bombo Military Barracks against UPDF FC and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA SC) were held to a scoreless draw at home by Onduparaka FC.
Newly promoted teams Maroons FC and Blacks Power had very different starts to life in the top division. Blacks Power suffered a 5-0 demolition at the hands of reigning Uganda Cup champions BUL FC while Maroons cruised to an easy victory, dispatching Busoga United 5-0.
