Uganda Premier League: SC Villa lose on final day, Vipers pounce to repeat as champions

The St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende was the scene of jubilant celebrations after Vipers SC confirmed their status as repeat champions of the Uganda Premier League in dramatic fashion on Saturday. The Venoms thrashed Busoga United by a 5-0 score courtesy of two goals from Abubakar Lawal as well as goals from Yunus Sentamu, Martin Kizza and Bright Anukani for a sixth top division title. Vipers end the season level on fifty-three points with Kampala Capital City Authority FC but take the trophy by virtue of having a better goal difference.

In order to capture their latest crown, Vipers needed a crucial result to go their way and it was SC Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Uganda Revenue Authority SC that made all the difference. A victory for Villa would have confirmed a seventeenth Premier League title and the club’s first since 2004 but the Jogoos could not get the job done. URA’s Najib Fesali crashed Villa’s party by heading in a free kick around the hour mark for the only goal of the match before URA held off a furious charge from the desperate hosts. Villa miss out on the title by two points, the exact amount the club was docked earlier this season by the league for supporter violence during a defeat to Wakiso Giants in November to make the collapse even more heartbreaking.

KCCA FC ended their campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Soltillo Bright Stars to confirm their status as runners-up for the second consecutive season. Young striker Rogers Mato scored a hat-trick in the victory which was bittersweet for supporters of the Kasasiro Boys after inconsistent form spoiled a strong start to the season to see the club come up short in their quest for a title.
