The 2021-22 season in Egyptian football officially started off with a stunning upset on Tuesday as reigning African champions Al Ahly fell to Tala’ea El Gaish in the Egyptian Super Cup following a penalty kick shootout. Despite featuring foreign stars such as Tunisia national team left back Ali MaĆ¢loul and introducing Mozambican star signing Luis Miquissone as a substitute, the 2020-21 Egyptian Premier League runners-up could not find a goal in regulation and the teams played out a scoreless draw to require the PK shootout. El Gaish keeper Mohamed Bassam was the hero by saving three of Ahly’s penalty kick attempts, including their final two kicks to preserve a 3-2 lead and see the result out.
Video of the penalty kick shootout is below following Ahram’s match report.
