Vipers SC seemed to have gotten their title-contending campaign back on track but a four-match unbeaten run came to an end in dramatic fashion on Tuesday with their 2-3 home defeat to Mbarara City. Despite star striker Yunus Sentamu tallying his 6th goal in 5 games to bring his season total to 17 and another first half goal from fellow striker Paul Mucureezi, Vipers fell victim to an inspired comeback from mid-table Mbarara. Two goals in the first twenty minutes of the second half, including a fantastic power strike from Bashir Mutanda to equalize, levelled the match before Jude Semugabi’s 86th minute winner completed the shock result.
It didn’t go much better for the Tax Collectors of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA SC), who turned in an uninspiring effort in their 1-0 loss to relegation battlers Kyetume. Kawowo’s David Isabirye remarked in his match report that the match appeared to be heading towards a scoreless draw before a free-kick goal from Latif Kiyemba provided the moment of quality to give the hosts a crucial boost to put themselves within three points of escaping the drop zone.
Taking advantage of the dropped points by the teams above them, Express FC took care of business against Busoga United with an easy 0-4 road victory to put themselves up a point at the top of the league table. A hat trick from Godfrey Lwesibawa boosted his season goal total to 10 and on fire forward Eric Kambale made it an astounding 8 goals in his last 5 matches to make it a four-goal lead in the 64th minute. Express, URA SC and Vipers are all within two points of each other at the top and it appears to be a three horse race for the title.
