The first round of qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics women’s football tournament is complete in the African region with a couple decisive victories along with a few close encounters. Ghana were one of the teams to progress without issues after the Black Queens defeated Guinea 4-0 in Accra to win 7-0 on aggregate.
It was a bit too close for comfort for supporters of Mali and Benin who expected to advance comfortably with second leg matches at home. Burkina Faso came back from a 1-0 first leg defeat to win 2-1 at Mali but unfortunately for the Burkinabé team the away goals rule is not in play. Mali found a goal in extra time to win 3-2 on aggregate and advance.
For Benin an early defensive mistake saw the Amazons fall behind against Guinea-Bissau but the hosts fought back with three first half goals for a 3-2 victory to win 5-4 on aggregate. Namibia also progressed after a 0-0 second leg result against Equatorial Guinea to win 2-0 on aggregate. DR Congo, Ivory Coast and Tanzania all progressed by walkover to join Tuesday’s victors as well as Uganda and Ethiopia.
