The Zambia Super League began its 2023-24 season on Friday with a victory for Nkwazi FC who defeated newly promoted side Konkola Blades by a 1-0 score at the Edwin Imboela Stadium in Lusaka. Stephen Mutama scored the only goal for the hosts who began their new campaign on a positive note after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
After nearly conceding in the opening minutes, hosts Nkwazi began to apply steady pressure on their opponents from the Copperbelt Province. George Ndhlovu was prevented from opening the scoring for Nkwazi close to the half hour mark when his well hit strike from the right wing was tipped over by Konkola goalkeeper David Mumba.
The theme of Nkwazi dominance continued into the second half but the hosts struggled to create clear opportunities on Mumba’s goal. The visitors held out through 75 minutes but a moment of quality made the difference soon after. Konkola failed to clear a long ball into the box and the ensuing Nkwazi cross from the right flank found Mutama who took the ball down excellently before firing past Mumba for the match winner.
