2025 AFCON: CAF president Motsepe confirms five hosting bids

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that five bids are in to replace Guinea as the hosts of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament after the West African nation’s hosting duties were removed due to concerns over infrastructure and preparation. Two bids from Morocco and Algeria were well known but the North African countries have competition from South Africa, Zambia and a joint bid made by neighbors Nigeria and Benin.

While in attendance at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria, Motsepe stated that a winner will be announced on February 10 after CAF officials conduct assessments in each country. The South African businessman said that the country with the best “transport, logistics, hotels and beautiful stadiums”, also indicating that the competition cannot be held consecutively in the same region. The last condition is likely to impact the odds of the Nigeria-Benin joint bid due to the 2023 edition set to be held in Ivory Coast.
