CAFCC: ASEC Mimosas hold US Monastir for first leg draw in Tunis

Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas put themselves in a good position on Sunday with a scoreless CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal first leg draw in Tunis against US Monastir. Les Mimos were the more dangerous side against the Tunisian club who created little to no danger for the visitors. The teams will meet again for the second leg in Bouaké in a week’s time where ASEC will attempt to earn a victory and their first ever appearance in the Confederation Cup semifinals.

Opportunities were hard to come by for both teams but it was soon clear that the visitors from Ivory Coast posed more of a threat to the goal than their hosts. ASEC forward Richard Zumah had two good looks on the Monastir goal with his diving header well kept out by goalkeeper Sadok Yeddes in the 23rd minute, filling in as the starter for the injured Bechir Ben Saïd. Zumah ran onto a loose ball ten minutes later but after driving in on goal from the left wing the Ghanaian forward’s hard shot was repelled by Yeddes.

The second half carried on similarly to the opening forty-five minutes with a little more inspiration from the hosts. A golden chance fell the way of Monastir late in the match when a cross from Haykeul Chikhaoui had the ASEC defense scrambling but substitute Abdelkader Boutiche could not finish and the home support was left disappointed on the day.

Highlights from the match are below.
