The 2022-23 Egypt Cup was the focus in Egyptian domestic football over the past week and the nation’s top clubs progressed while one notable upset occurred. On Sunday a late Hussein El Shahat goal was the difference as Al Ahly defeated second division side Suez SC 1-0 in the Round of 32.
In the Round of 16, Zamalek progressed to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over fellow Egyptian Premier League side Pharco FC. Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” converted a penalty kick to open the scoring after a highly controversial call from the referee. The early penalty kick set the tone as Mostafa Shalaby doubled the Zamalek lead just before halftime and left back Ahmed Fatouh finished the scoring for the hosts late on.
Another top division side, Smouha, suffered the major upset of the round with a 1-0 defeat to Nogoom FC. Best known as the club where Egyptian goalkeeping legend Essam El Hadary ended his career, Nogoom are currently in the third division of Egyptian football and Nour Aladdin’s excellent second half strike will have the club dreaming of continuing their magical cup run.
