Early second-half goal gives Malawi 1-0 win over South Sudan and sets up decisive home clash vs. Uganda

Malawi utilized a goal from one of their players based in South Africa as Baroka FC forward Richard Mbulu scored from a Gerald Phiri corner-kick to clinch a 1-0 AFCON qualifying victory against South Sudan in Omdurman, Sudan. The win gives the Flames three massive points and an opportunity to slip into a qualification spot in Group B if they can defeat Uganda on Monday. South Sudan are now mathematically eliminated following the loss and a hard-fought campaign.

In his report on the match for Malawi24, Andrew Cane Chilapondwa writes that Malawi had the better of proceedings and played an attack-minded formation to try and find a goal, something that has been quite difficult to obtain in recent times. After a first-half where Malawi almost took the lead just before the break, Phiri’s corner-kick was nodded in by Mbulu to provide the difference only a couple of minutes into the second session. With star goalscorer Gabadinho Mhango returning and a squad that looks to be full-strength, the Flames will fancy their chances of finding a victory against struggling Uganda.

The match report from Malawi24 is in the link below and a cell phone video of the goal is further down.
