A core training group has been preparing for weeks ahead of Ghana’s important AFCON qualifying match against South Africa to build chemistry in the absence of key European-based players and Thursday will bring a stern road test for the Black Stars. Ghana Soccernet mentions that due to the first match being in South Africa, Ghana’s stars including Thomas Partey and the Ayew brothers will be unavailable but are set to be ready for the second game against São Tomé and Principé.
Ghana and their opponents are tied with Sudan on nine points going into the match with only two spots available. Needing only a draw to clinch advancement to the AFCON in Cameroon on Thursday, Ghana have the luxury of a home match against the bottom team in the group to fall back on in case of a poor result against Bafana Bafana.
