Comoros seal historic first AFCON qualification, Egypt seal Kenya’s fate in Group G action

They didn’t do it in style but Les CÅ“lacanthes of Comoros achieved a historic moment for the island nation by drawing 0-0 against Togo in front of their home fans, booking a ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon. Facing a Togolese side that was already eliminated and playing for the future, Comoros lacked finishing on opportunities but maintained their excellent defensive form to get the point.

In Group G’s second match Kenya put up a courageous performance after overcoming an early conceded goal to dominate visitors Egypt, but only earned a 1-1 draw for their efforts. Needing wins in both of their final games, the Harambee Stars now join Togo in no longer being able to catch Egypt or Comoros for a qualification spot.

An inspired run and cross from right-back Mohamed Hany found Mohamed Magdi “Afsha”, who put an excellent finish into the roof of the net to give the Pharoahs a 2nd minute lead. Kenya played with a relaxed demeanor that served them well in attack despite conceding early, creating several set piece opportunities that had Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy scrambling. The Pharoahs were fortunate to make it to halftime still in the lead.

A furious goalmouth scramble following a 64th minute Kenyan corner-kick led to Bandari defender Hassan Abdallah being on the spot to equalize for the Harambee Stars. However, a lack of poise prevented Kenya from going on to win with Johnstone Omurwa getting a 75th minute red card for lashing out.
