Ahly and Zamalek overcome second-tier sides to advance in Egypt Cup

Egypt’s top teams faced some resistance against second-tier sides in their domestic cup fixtures on Wednesday as the Egypt Cup wrapped up its first round. Al Ahly left it late against a stubborn Al Nasr side but prevailed 2-1 courtesy of an 83rd minute goal from Walter Bwalya, his second in all competitions since joining in January. Club legend Walid Soliman opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before Al Nasr’s equalizer in the 54th minute to put the result in doubt. The result will do little to quell some of the doubts about the team’s performance with a decisive victory expected against the struggling second division club.

Zamalek also faced adversity in their cup tie when they went down within the opening ten minutes to Haras El Hodood. The visitors, having been relegated from the Egyptian Premier League last season, found their surprise opener in the 9th minute on a low long range effort from Hassan Youssef. However, a red card for Haras El Hodood led to a Youssef Obama free-kick for Zamalek’s response in the 19th minute. Defender Mahmoud Alaa clinched advancement for the hosts with a pair of penalty kicks in the second-half.

Video of the goals from both games are below.

Al Ahly 2-1 Al Nasr

Zamalek 3-1 Haras El Hodood
