Gambia’s historic first qualification for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals was set to see the team awarded approximately $215,000 by the country’s government with an invitation to visit president Adama Barrow, but the team has declined the invitation. BBC Sport Africa’s Momodou Bah reports that the team declined the invitation because they feel the reward does not match the historic achievement and in a letter expressed that “the team feels that the respect and motivation given to the players fall below what it is supposed to be.
