Africa Cup of Nations: European clubs express ‘deep concerns’ ahead of tournament

Opposition from European clubs to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon continues to grow with the European Club Association (ECA) expressing its concern over the welfare of players due to the Covid-19 Omicron variant outbreak. The ECA resolved to work with FIFA to “protect players and club interests as the health situation continues to deteriorate in an alarming manner” as ten more African countries were added to the United Kingdom’s “red list” for travel, meaning a situation where clubs cannot release players for international duty may reoccur in a similar manner to matches that took place in FIFA World Cup qualifying in September.

BBC Sport Africa has more on the implications of the ECA’s positions in the link below as well as its opposition to a FIFA World Cup taking place every two years.
