All three of the main contenders for the 2021-22 Egyptian Premier League had fixtures over the Christmas weekend, and Zamalek was the only one to achieve victory following their 4-0 result over Ghazl El Mahallah. Moroccan national team forward Achraf Bencharki scored twice with Mostafa Fathi and Mohammed Ounajem contributing the other goals for the hosts. With the victory, the defending champions move back level with rivals Al Ahly at the top of the table on 19 points, but Ahly still have one game to make up.
Ahly returned to league action for the first time in a month after winning the 2021 CAF Super Cup over Raja Casablanca earlier in the week, drawing 1-1 on the road against top division newcomers Future FC. It was a dream start for Ahly when Ahmed Abdel Kader Radwan danced past two Future FC defenders to get to the end line before crossing low for Mohamed Sherif to finish and put the visitors up in the 3rd minute. However, excellent work from Future FC forward Ahmed Atef saw him get behind the Ahly defense and send a ball back across the penalty area for Karem Nedved to score with a sliding shot.
Pyramids FC missed out on a chance to move level with Ahly and Zamalek at the top following their 1-1 road draw against ENPPI. Palestine national team and Pyramids striker Mahmoud Wadi continued his excellent season with a finish in the 42nd minute to make it five goals in six league games this campaign. ENPPI put up more of a fight in the second half and were able to claw their way back into the match despite only having one shot on goal in the 90 minutes. Just after the 48 minute mark, a corner kick caused Pyramids keeper Sherif Ekramy all sorts of trouble and the veteran spilled his attempted catch right in front of the goal, allowing Ibrahim Yehia to finish from close range for the equalizer. Pyramids remain two points behind Ahly and Zamalek.
