FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Tresor Mputu leads DR Congo’s squad to Egypt for preparations

The Democratic Republic of Congo national side failed to qualify for the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, but the Leopards will be dedicated to preparing for the final round of FIFA World Cup qualifying during the coming months. On Monday a group composed of 27 players based at African clubs arrived in Egypt for a camp that will go until January 8, with long time national team great and TP Mazembe playmaker Trésor Mputu among the group. Two friendly games are scheduled against local clubs and another camp will take place later in January that should feature players who play their club football outside of Africa. The first sub-Saharan African national team to qualify for a World Cup, DR Congo are two games away from making it for the first time since the 1974 edition, when the country was known as Zaire.
