Government intervention was the reason cited as FIFA suspended the football teams of Zimbabwe and Kenya from participating in any international competitions on Friday. Both football federations were stripped of their powers and replaced by government institutions due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement, but FIFA decided to intervene as it has done in similar cases in the past. The first consequence of the suspension came for Kenya, whose women’s national football team was banned from qualifying for the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations.
