Cameroon’s leadership under fire as Indomitable Lions attempt to stun Algeria in WC playoff second leg

The situation is dire for Cameroon as the Indomitable Lions travel to Blida in Algeria for the second leg of their FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff. Losing 1-0 in Douala with an uninspiring performance, the team and new manager Rigobert Song are under fire from a very displeased Cameroonian fanbase and will need to break down a fierce Algerian defense on their home ground to qualify for Qatar.

Song acknowledged that his team failed to succeed in the small details which led to a collapse in the bigger picture, also updating supporters on the status of striker and captain Vincent Aboubakar who appears set to play after suffering a heel injury in the first leg. The man who hired Song, national team legend and current Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o, is feeling the heat and even joined in on training to inspire the Lions to perform better.

The team’s system did not change from the previous regime under Antonio Conceição with a 4-3-3 used, but Eric Choupo-Moting came under heavy fire from supporters after he was ineffective while filling in for the injured Moumi Ngamaleu. Cameroon midfielder Samuel Oum Gouet came to the defense of the Bayern Munich forward, acknowledging that Algeria’s game plan was the reason for their success in Douala.
