Algeria in danger of facing sanctions from FIFA after WC qualifying playoff referee Gassama submits report

The aftermath of Algeria’s heartbreaking defeat to Cameroon in the qualifying playoff for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is still ongoing with the Algerian federation and support still protesting the refereeing of Gambian Bakary Gassama. The result will remain with Cameroon advancing on away goals thanks to Karl Toko Ekambi’s dramatic late strike in extra time but the response of supporters and the federation could have financial consequences for Algerian football.

After objects were thrown on the pitch following the second leg and Gassama was attacked at the airport as he departed the country, the Gambian official’s post-match report was submitted to FIFA will likely result in punishment for the Algerian federation from the world footballing body.
