Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati acquire Nigerian midfielder Obinna Nwobodo as a Designated Player

After a few seasons of futility among the worst sides since joining American top division Major League Soccer, FC Cincinnati are showing real signs of improvement in the 2022 season and acquired a potentially important piece as the team attempts to push for their first participation in the MLS playoffs. 25-year-old Nigerian defensive midfielder Owinna Nwobodo was announced as a new signing earlier this week from Turkish Super League side Göztepe S.K. with Cincinnati hoping that the former Rangers International player will give them a ball-winning presence that has been lacking in past seasons.

Nwobodo ranked at the top of the list in Turkey when it came to defensive statistics and will be classified as a Designated Player, joining Argentinean playmaker Luciano Acosta and Brazilian forward Brenner as players at the club who are on more lucrative contracts under MLS’s DP rule.
