The South African Football Association (SAFA) requested that CAF move the venue of Liberia’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Morocco to a different country this week. Liberia arranged for their home qualifying fixtures to be played in Morocco due to not having a suitable stadium in the country that meets CAF’s requirements, setting up a “home” match against Morocco that will take place in the North African country. SAFA stated that they understand the situation but feel that the other Group K competitors should not be disadvantaged due to the circumstances.
Bafana Bafana are in Group K along with Liberia, Morocco and Zimbabwe and feel that Liberia hosting a home match against the Atlas Lions in Morocco will give the group favorites an unfair advantage over the other three teams. Morocco had a similar situation in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, playing all six of their fixtures on home soil and going undefeated on their way to qualification due to group rivals Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sudan having similar situations.
