Uganda name squad for 2023 AFCON qualifying clashes against Algeria and Niger

Uganda national team coach Micho Sredojevic called up a list of 33 players for the Cranes’ opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches in early June. The Cranes will face an uphill task in their opening match at Algeria on June 4 before hosting Niger four days later in Entebbe as they hope to advance as one of the top-2 sides in Group which also contains neighbors Tanzania. The big news coming out of Ugandan media is in regards to the absence of Vipers SC forward Yunus Sentamu, which Sredojevic stated was for “personal reasons” but is in reality likely to be because of tensions between Sentamu and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

Sredojevic called in several stars based abroad including Rwanda based veteran forward Emmanuel Okwi, Allan Okello from Algeria’s Paradou AC and 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations leading scorer Derrick Kakooza who is now based in Latvian football. Motherwell’s Bevis Mugabi is set to lead in the center of defense while young Vipers SC star and FUFA Male Player of the Year Bobosi Byaruhanga will look to convert his excellent club form to national team success. Farouk Miya is back in the fold after making his return to the Cranes in March friendlies against Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The majority of players on the list are in the picture below and the full group is in the link from Kawowo.
