El Moutaraji brace ends Al Ahly’s CAF Champions League dominance in Wydad victory

Two goals from Zouheir El Moutaraji highlighted a triumphant 2021-22 CAF Champions League final for Wydad AC as the Moroccan club shut out Egypt’s Al Ahly by a 2-0 score on Monday at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. Wydad win the CAFCL for the first time since the 2017 season when they defeated Al Ahly by a 2-1 aggregate score. The result ends a two-year spell of dominance for Ahly as Wydad will represent Africa in the next FIFA Club World Cup.

Following concerns and protests from Ahly over the hosting of the final in Casablanca, an unquestionably partisan crowd urged Wydad on to an excellent first half performance. After an uneventful opening ten minutes, Wydad and Republic of Congo striker Guy Mbenza brought the crowd back to full volume when he clattered a shot from twenty yards off the crossbar. Only a few minutes later it was El Moutaraji who caused pandemonium when he cut inside and blasted a long distance effort that Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy had no chance of stopping.

Ahly woke up a bit after the twenty minute mark and created chances through the dead ball services of left back Ali Maâloul, whose corner kicks found Yasser Ibrahim and Taher Mohamed for headed attempts that went wide. While it seemed like Ahly looked capable of getting back into the match, soon after halftime El Moutaraji struck again. A cross from Wydad right back Ayoub El Amloud to the far post found the Man of the Match, who snuck inside of Ahly right back Mohamed Hany for a shot that was saved by El Shenawy right back to El Moutaraji for an easy finish into the roof of the net.

Ahly manager Pitso Mosimane brought on several changes to improve his team’s fortunes moving forward but it was too little too late for the Egyptian club. Wydad keeper Ahmed Reda Tagnouti came up with saves when his team needed it and center back Achraf Dari made things difficult for Ahly forward Percy Tau throughout the match. Wydad stayed back and absorbed pressure to hold out for their third title in Africa’s top club competition.

Highlights of the match are below.
