Egypt Cup: Al Ahly on to semifinals with victory over Pyramids FC

The 2020-21 edition of the Egypt Cup is still ongoing and completed its quarterfinal round on Sunday with Al Ahly on the positive end of a 2-1 result over Pyramids FC. Taher Mohamed opened the scoring for Ahly and little-used striker Hossam Hassan put the match away late on with his first ever competitive goal for the club. Ahly advance to the semifinals where they will face second tier side Petrojet on Saturday for a spot in the final against Zamalek.

Pyramids were determined to avenge an early season league defeat to Ahly and nearly took the lead when playmaker Abdallah Said pounced on a loose pass before curling his shot just over the bar in the 13th minute. Soon after the hosts took the lead from a set piece situation. An 18th minute Mohamed Magdy “Afsha” corner kick found Taher at the far post for looping header that found its way over Pyramids goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy and into the net.

Both teams had their opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half as well as after halftime but poor finishing kept the score 1-0 to Ahly until second half stoppage time. In the first minute of time added on Ahly substitute Salah Mohsen nodded down a long ball to Afsha and the playmaker set up Hassan for a low finish past Ekramy to put his side beyond reach. Ramadan Sobhi converted a penalty kick five minutes later but it was too late for a Pyramids comeback.
