Ricardo Soares widely expected to become next manager of Al Ahly

After plenty of speculation in Egyptian and Portuguese media it appears that Portuguese coach Ricardo Soares will succeed Pitso Mosimane as manager of Cairo giants Al Ahly. The 47-year-old and his assistants parted ways with Portuguese Primeira Liga club Gil Vicente ahead of his expected move to Ahly. Soares led Gil Vicente to a surprise fifth place finish in Portugal’s top division and qualification for the 2022-23 UEFA Europa Conference League.

Ahly have been on the search for a new head coach since South African manager Mosimane’s departure on June 13. Samy Komsan has been in charge on an interim basis with the team winning three matches and drawing one during his spell. The 2021-22 CAF Champions League finalists are currently four points back of Egyptian Premier League leaders Zamalek with three games still to make up on their rivals, which will help Soares quickly get accustomed to the high pressure of his new job.
